Welcome to the capital of Overijssel, steeped in history. In the Golden Age (roughly the 17th century) Zwolle rapidly developed into a powerful Hanseatic city. When you walk through the medieval centre you literally taste its rich past up until today. The historic gables, the monumental patrician's houses, the ancient city wall and the moat are showpieces of Zwolle's beautiful history. So are the many monuments and churches. Its 600-year-old city gate, the Sassenpoort, is mentioned in the top 100 of the National Heritage Register.
